My Friend Karla

My friend Karla came and picked me up today for a luncheon date. We first knew each other clear back in 1955, 53 years ago. My family moved into a new house and she lived across the street.
We became good friends, played together and went to 5th and 6th grade together. This is our school picture.

My family had to move to California because of a job transfer and so our ways parted even though we moved back in only a year. Our lives were very different for the next 40 or so years, me raising a family and Karla teaching many hundreds of children in elementary school. But now we've resumed our friendship and occasionally do fun things together. Don't play paper dolls or jacks anymore but enjoy each other once again!
A true friend is person who will ALWAYS be a friend. Karla is a true friend!

An Apple a Day.......

They say an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Well....we have enough to keep him away for quite a while.

This past week, Bernell and I picked about 7 or 8 bushels from our golden delicious tree in the back yard. Anyone for apple pie, apple cobbler, apple muffins, baked apple, apple sauce, or apple jelly? I made some apple-plum jelly yesterday. Bernell made some apple muffins this morning.
I took several large grocery size bags to all our daughters and Bernell's given some to friends.
These are some we still have left.
We also have a red delicious tree in front. They are just about ready, too. Anyone need some apples?
.....Maybe our neighbor across the street would like some. He can see this tree from his house and maybe he can enjoy some of these ....I hope so!

Plum Cake

I baked a plum cake. We have a volunteer plum tree growing behind our garage. It grows purple plums about the size of large walnuts. Don't know what kind it is but they are good for eating and making plum cake.
My mom used to make this cake when I was a kid. She'd slice the plums in half and remove the pits. Then lay them in rows on top of a thick white cake batter; sprinkle sugar on top and bake. This is similar to what her's were like only she'd make her cakes a lot larger than this one. So plum cake makes me think of her..... I miss her.

My mom was a special person whom I loved and still miss all the time. She's been gone now for over 24 years. We did many things together such as going out to lunch for a hamburger or shopping or just fixing her hair. Her fantastic dinners were something to look forward to.
I made an apple pie the other day. Mom used to make a huge apple pie in a big rectangle casserole dish so they were actually apple squares. It's funny how certain foods will remind me of her.

Eating the plum cake, yesterday, made me think of her.

I still miss my mom......
